   Power Engineering 2

This course is an introduction to the field of thermodynamic processes in thermal power plants, energy balances and structure of various renewable and conventional energy production technologies. Students will became also familiar with individual components of self consumption of power plants. The power generation and distribution are linked to high voltage systems and insulation materials. The fundamental theory of often used insulation materials and their propertis will be explained. Lightning and switching overvoltages and their impact to the insulation of electric power system will be discussed at the end of the course.

Main Topics:

  1. Classification of energy resources and fundamental terminology.
  2. Laws of thermodynamics and thermodynamic processes.
  3. Thermodynamic cycles and their efficiency improvements.
  4. Energy balance equations of thermal power plant.
  5. Technological circuits of thermal power plants.
  6. Nuclear reactors and power plants.
  7. Hydro power plants.
  8. Renewable power resources.
  9. Electric power system of power plants, structure and dimensioning of self consumption system.
  10. High voltage laboratories and high voltage tests.
  11. Overvoltages in electrical power systems and insulation coordination.
  12. Switching and lightning overvoltages.
  13. Overvoltage protection devices.

+ Courses for practical calculations (usually work with Mollier (h-s) diagram for water and steam).

Assessment

Mid-semester test – Monday 27th November 2017
Laboratory exercises - three laboratory excercises in high voltage lab in the second part of seminars

To get an assessment, at least 50% of maximum points from Mid-semestr test and the acceptance of all laboratory records is required.

If you do not attend the test without a previous apology, it is automatically evaluated for 0 points!!!

All students have an opportunity to write the corrective test that will be held in the first week of exam period (during regulary exam on Monday 8th January 2018).

Exam

Mid-semester test (three exercises, 60 minutes) and final exam test (three theoretical questions and three exercises, 120 minutes) in written form. Points: Mid-semester test 10 pts (first attempt only!!) and final exam test 60 pts make together 70 pts. The final grade is given by the fellowing table:

ABCDEF
90 - 100 % 80 - 89 %70 - 79 % 60 - 69 % 50 - 59 % < 50 %
63 - 70 p. 56 - 62 p. 49 - 55 p. 42 - 48 p. 35 - 41 p. < 35 p.
To pass the exam, at least 10 points from each of the both parts of the final test (theoretical questions and exercises) are required!
